Bengali Matar Kachori

As some of you may already know, I have a cutie Bengali as my SO. Every now and then I like to make him little Bengali treats. This Diwali post will cover a delicious savory pastry filled with peas and spices. Kachoris are my favorite. Well, I have lots of favorites and kachoris are definitely up there on the top of my list.

These matar kachoris would be perfect to serve as a snack for any Diwali get together/party. They are simply to make and oh so delicious. DSC_0650

You can use frozen peas that have been parboiled, or canned peas. 1 can of peas and a couple cups of flour will get you about 8 kachoris. They also reheat really well if you have leftovers. Just bake them in the oven at 350 for about 10 min and there you go. I hope you like them as much as we do!

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of peas, rinsed and drained, and slightly mashed
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 green chili finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • pinch of red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp besan
  • pinch of cardamom powder
  • oil for frying

Dough

  • 2.5 cups maida
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp ghee, use oil if vegan
  • water

To Make:

Make the dough. Add the salt to the flour and mix. Add the ghee and mix until crumbly. Now add enough water to make a soft dough. Cover with damp towel for half an hour.

Heat the oil in a pan and add the ginger garlic paste. Saute till raw smell goes away. Add the spices and stir for a few seconds. Add the peas and mix well. Add the besan and mix well. Turn off heat and let cool.

Divide dough into equal parts and the pea mixture into equal parts. Roll out the dough pieces slightly. Add pea stuffing. Seal the dough and gently flatten into a disc. Fry each side at 330 (samosa temp) degrees until golden.

  1. These look absolutely amazing Whit. Ah, yum… any spiced filling stuffed into a crispy golden crust is a winner in my opinion! Btw your Bengali boy is ridiculously lucky to have someone as talented as you as his girl! I’d be blissfully happy to eat from your kitchen every day! xx
